FAQS about RAW Apple Cider at Devon Point Farm!

What’s the difference between apple juice and apple cider?
Simply, apple juice has been filtered and apple cider has not, so it retains bits of pulp and sediment making it have that cloudy, slightly darker appearance.

What do you mean by “RAW” cider?
Devon Point Farm raw apple cider is made by cold pressing unsprayed ‘beyond organic’ apples, with no heat treatment, and no UV pasteurization. There are no additives, and no preservatives and it is completely unpasteurized. (Pasteurization is a process invented by French scientist Louis Pasteur during the nineteenth century. In 1864, Pasteur discovered that heating beer and wine was enough to kill most of the bacteria that caused spoilage, preventing these beverages from turning sour.)

Can I pasteurize raw cider at my home?
I want cider from your unsprayed ‘beyond organic’ apples, but I’m concerned about the cider being raw and unpasteurized, how can I pasteurize it at home?
The USDA recommends that to pasteurize raw cider by heating, simply heat it to 160 degrees for six (6) seconds. This way you can still enjoy apple cider from Devon Point Farm that is made from unsprayed apples, free from pesticides, fungicides and any other chemicals, while alleviating any concerns about bacteria.

What do you mean by “Unsprayed ‘Beyond Organic’” apples?
The apples we use have zero spray and no chemicals used on them whatsoever. That means our apples and our apple cider is free from pesticides, fungicides and any other chemicals. Our entire farm is farmed following ‘beyond’ organic practices, which means we don’t use any sprays or products on our apples or near our apples at all. (Organic standards still allow for the use of many different sprays, fertilizers, pesticides, fungicides and herbicides which don’t use.) We use NOTHING on our apples or near them.

How Long Will Raw Apple Cider Last In My Fridge?
Raw apple cider will keep approximately 10 days to 2 weeks (refrigerated) without preservatives. UV pasteurizing does not change the length of time cider will keep. If our cider turns before it is consumed, it will taste like vinegar. I've found that by simply freezing cider, it can be kept all year. Why should something so great as cider be limited to Fall?

Does Devon Point Farm Raw Cider Contain Alcohol?
No. Cider that contains alcohol is called “Hard Cider.” Our raw cider is just sweet non-alcoholic cider (unfiltered apple juice).

Can I use this raw cider to make my own apple cider vinegar or hard cider?
YES! Our raw cider is the perfect first step to making your own homemade raw, unfiltered apple cider or hard cider. There are hundreds of websites on how to make both, just do a quick google search and get ready to have some fun!

Does Devon Point Farm Raw Cider Contain Sugar?
There is no added sugar to our raw cider, the only sugars that are in the cider are those that occur naturally in the apples.

Is Devon Point Farm Raw Cider Gluten Free?
Yes, our cider is a naturally gluten-free beverage.

What about ‘GMO’?
Our apples are NON-GMO, the trees are very old and were planted long before genetically modified organisms (GMO’s) were ever even invented. We have lots of heirloom and antique variety apples and are very proud of their all-natural state!

Why the Government Warning?
The FDA requires that all unpasteurized (raw) apple cider be labeled with the following warning:   “WARNING: This product has not been pasteurized and therefore may contain harmful bacteria that can cause serious illness in children, the elderly, and persons with weakened immune systems.”   Why? When fruits and vegetables are fresh-squeezed to produce juice, any bacteria that are present on the inside or the outside of the produce can become part of the finished product. Unless the juice is further processed to destroy harmful bacteria such as E. coli and Salmonella, it could be dangerous for those most at risk for foodborne illness.

What Are The Health Benefits of Raw, Unpasteurized Apple Cider (unfiltered, cold-pressed apple juice)?
While there is a government warning about consuming raw apple cider (see above), there are many health benefits to the juice that are eliminated during heat or UV pasteurization. Raw apple cider is a living food, filled with natural enzymes, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidents that have health benefits ranging from protection against cancer to alzheimers, immune-boosting qualities, as well as being good for your digestive system.   Don’t take our word for it… click the following links for more information:
